The Yale Drama Series
Prize for emerging playwrights
Yale
University Press and Yale Repertory Theatre are partners in
a new venture to support emerging playwrights. They jointly
sponsor The Yale Drama Series, a major new playwriting
competition. The winner of the annual competition is
awarded the David C. Horn Prize of $10,000, publication of
his/her manuscript by Yale University Press, and a staged
reading at Yale Rep. The Yale Drama Series and David C. Horn
Prize are funded by generous support from the David Charles
Horn Foundation.
Sir David Hare, the second judge of the series, just completed his second term of judging the annual award. After awarding the prize to a second women he commented on what he perceived as a turning tide for female playwrights: "Next year I hand over to a new judge. Before I do, I would like to mention that I gave last year's prize to Frances Ya-Chu Cowhig for Lidless. This year there is another female winner. Of the twelve plays on this year's short-list, nine were written by women.
Tony Award-winning playwright John Guare follows Sir David Hare and Edward Albee as judge for annual playwriting prize for 3 years starting 2011. Mrs Horn said, “What an honor for the Foundation and the Series that John Guare will be our next judge. The job is mammoth and he embraces it with joy and enthusiasm.”
We are excited to continue our work with such a special writer and human being.
The foundation will continue to seek the best with the best.
Submissions for the 2011 Competition must be postmarked no earlier than June 1, 2010 and no later than August 15, 2010.
See Competition Rules for precise information regarding your entry.
